Advanced Engineering College - DevOps Session

This session covered DevOps as it is actually practised — the working relationship between development and operations, and the pipeline that turns a commit into running software.

The ground it covers is version control as the single source of truth, continuous integration that builds and tests every change, continuous delivery that makes a release routine rather than an event, infrastructure as code so environments are reproducible instead of hand-built, and the monitoring and logging that tell you what is happening once the system is live. On AWS these map onto services such as CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CloudFormation and CloudWatch, though the practices matter more than any particular tool.

DevOps is difficult to teach from a syllabus because most of it is a response to problems that only appear at scale — environments drifting apart, releases that nobody wants to run on a Friday, outages nobody can explain. A practitioner-led session is largely about making those problems visible before students meet them at work.
